This lesson is all about IELTS advantage disadvantage essay questions when you are told to assess whether or not the advantages of something outweigh the drawbacks. The main topics the essay which will be used for example is about the trend to live and work abroad.
Take a look at the essay question we will analyse:
People will have the freedom to anywhere work and live in the world because of the development of communication technology and transportation.
Perform some advantages for this development outweigh the disadvantages?
Knowing the Task
It is important to distinguish between this and one that asks you to discuss advantages and disadvantages but does not ask your opinion when you have this type of advantage disadvantage essay.
If you should be asked “ What are the benefits and drawbacks of….. ” you are not being asked your opinion. You just need to discuss the advantages and disadvantages.
You might do that in two body paragraphs – one discussing the positive points, the next discussing the negative points.
However, then you are being asked for your opinion and you must say which there are the most of – positive or negative impacts if you have the word “ outweigh ” or “ Will this trend have more positive or negative effects.
Should you not repeat this you might get your score reduced on ‘ Task Response ’ for not fully addressing the question.
Take a good look at these examples:
People are in possession of the freedom to work and live anywhere on earth because of the development of communication technology and transportation.
Which are the benefits and drawbacks of this trend?
This advantage disadvantage essay is not asking for the opinion . You might simply write one paragraph regarding the advantages and another in the disadvantages. However, this one does:
People will have the freedom to work and live anywhere on earth as a result of growth of communication technology and transportation.
Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
Will this have more positive or negative impacts?
Writing your Thesis
Another point to be cautious of is utilizing the word ‘outweigh’. It’s quite common for IELTS students to get mixed up when they write the thesis statement, as well as say the contrary as to what they write into the essay!
As an example, they are going to say the drawbacks outweigh the benefits, but then give more benefits within the essay. This makes no sense.
So in this type of IELTS advantage disadvantage essay if you are not sure you can use the word correctly, I would recommend not using it. You are able to just say exactly what your opinion is, as in the thesis when you look at the model answer:
i really believe that it has more benefits than drawbacks.
This will avoid any mistakes.
Planning and Organisation
You then need to think about 3 supporting ideas . One for example side as well as 2 for the other side.
So you will then have three body paragraphs , one aided by the drawback / benefit and two utilizing the advantages / disadvantages.
It’s quite common academic practice to begin with the opposing opinion to yours, in order to start with the point that you have one idea for.
As explained above, it’s very important, particularly if you are seeking a band 7 or higher, that your opinion reflects what is in your essay. So if sa >two is had by you benefits and one drawback .
My advice for these relevant questions would be to write buy essay a paragraph about each side , and then make it clear in the introduction and conclusion which side outweighs the other (in other words. your opinion about whether there are more advantages or disadvantages).
It was a recent exam question:
in a few countries, governments are encouraging industries and businesses to move to regional areas outside of the big cities. Perform some advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?
Below are a few ideas:
- Introduce the topic by paraphrasing the statement , then give a clear opinion about whether there are many advantages or disadvantages.
- Advantages – e.g. costs are reduced in regional areas; there is certainly more space; prov >Disadvantages – e.g. greater accessibility to skilled workers in big cities; better transport and infrastructure; companies located in regional areas are further from their customers, prov >Conclude by summarizing your opinion in a different way.
